Latest News and Update from the Celtic FC Academy:

"The overarching goal of Celtic FC Academy is to ‘develop the person, develop the player’.  With this in mind, the focus on wellbeing support has grown in momentum over the last two years, with the appointment of two full-time dedicated Wellbeing Officers who work with our young players across the Academy.

Our Wellbeing Team was created at the beginning of the 2022/23 season and sits as part of the Safeguarding Department. Together with my colleague Morag Murray, Player Wellbeing Officer for the Girls’ Academy, we bring over 20 years of experience in our respective careers within social work and educational psychology where we worked supporting children, young people and their families.

With our expertise and passion, we quickly recognised that high expectations and pressure to perform within pro-youth football can make the environment intense and, at times uncertain.  Young players been the ages of 8 and 18 years old in development football require high levels of care and communication in line with our Academy values of RESPECT, INTEGRITY, and COMMITMENT & SUPPORT. This ensures that our children and young people have the best possible experience at the club.  We work closely with key stakeholders across the Academy and our multi-disciplinary colleagues to support what is best for the child or young person, and to give them a voice in decisions that affect them.

Over the last 20 months, we have carried out almost 300 one-to-one meetings, allowing players to engage, share any concerns and become familiar with the pathway to seek support in future times of need.  When issues are identified through this, we respond to try and impact a positive change.

In regards to participation, we have delivered workshops to staff, players and parents on a number of topics including Children’s Rights, Culture & Values and Safeguarding.  This has helped set expectations for parents and staff on how to protect our young players and operate in line with organisational values.  Inputs around nutrition, relaxation, mental health awareness, social media, bullying and anti-sectarianism have also been carried out.  Educational sessions on the important issues of tackling racism and homophobia in Scottish football took place, with more education planned for 2023/24 as we continue to prioritise developing the ‘person first’.

Transitions are a key focus of wellbeing support and it has been reassuring that we have become a regular part of the process alongside the football staff, regarding players' pathways through the Academy.  This is also true for key times such as onboarding, coming into host parent accommodation, moving from Junior Academy to Intermediate Academy or leaving education to move into full-time football.  With our input to these processes from a wellbeing perspective, children and young people have told us that they feel valued, respected and more supported to speak up and give their views.  ‘Player Voice’ has been established as a forum to receive feedback on how we can include the voices of our young players at different ages and stages in matters that affect them.

From an overall safeguarding perspective, the visibility of Wellbeing Officers around the Academy increases confidence for players, parents and staff and provides a contact point for reporting concerns.  We know that this visibility at training, games, and events decreases opportunities for poor practice, and research tells us that an environment where poor practice is common can become a place where abusive behaviour can emerge and thrive.  As such, it is crucially important to continue that model of visibility, in order to safeguard our young people.  To help in this task we are currently looking to expand and recruit Assistant Player Wellbeing staff to support our goals.  We love our job and learn every day about how the highs and lows of football affect young people and their families.  It’s fair to say that the wellbeing journey is underway, but it is still only the beginning of where we hope and believe it can go with everyone’s backing and support."
